What does Google Ads accept?
Cards and, in many countries, bank accounts, with the exact list depending on the country on the payments profile. That country is set when the profile is created, which means the available payment methods on an account you buy were decided before you got there.
This is the quiet reason geography matters. An account's country does not only affect tax and currency.
It decides which payment methods are even offered to you inside the account.
Why do payments fail?
Usually the issuing bank, not Google. A recurring charge from a foreign merchant to a card the bank has not seen used that way is a standard decline pattern, and it repeats every time the threshold is reached. The account looks broken while nothing is actually wrong with it.
- Bank declines a cross-border recurring charge. Most common by a distance.
- Card limits. A threshold higher than the card's per-transaction ceiling fails every single time.
- Expired or replaced card still sitting on the payments profile.
- Mismatch between the card's country and the profile's country. Sometimes fine, sometimes declined, rarely explained.
- An outstanding balance from a previous holder blocking everything until it is cleared.
The diagnostic is simple: a failure that repeats at the same amount is the bank, and a failure that happens once is usually noise.
How do you change a payment method safely?
- Clear anything outstanding first — a new method on an account with a debt fails for the old reason.
- Add the new method before removing the old one — so there is no window with nothing attached.
- Change nothing else that week — not the country, not the vertical, not the budget. One change at a time.
- Watch the next charge — the charge is the test, not the fact that the card saved without an error.
- Keep the old method on the profile briefly — removing it the same hour leaves nothing to fall back to.
This is not about hiding anything from Google. It is about not doing four unusual things on the same day, which is what turns an ordinary administrative change into a reviewed one.
Common questions
Why do cards get declined on Google Ads?
Most often because the issuing bank declines a cross-border recurring charge from a merchant it does not recognise, not because Google rejected anything. The pattern is a card that works everywhere else and fails here, repeatedly, at the same amount.
Does changing the payment method look suspicious?
Changing it is ordinary. Changing it at the same time as the billing country, the vertical and the daily budget is the pattern that gets looked at. One change at a time, with a few days between, is the whole of the advice.
