Threshold

The Google Ads payment threshold

The billing threshold is the accrued cost at which Google charges a postpay account. Google raises it by itself as the account pays reliably over time. It cannot be requested, bought separately or transferred, which is precisely why an account that has one is worth more than one that does not.

What exactly is the payment threshold?

It is the level of unbilled advertising cost that triggers a charge on a postpay account. Two things can fire that charge, whichever arrives first: unbilled cost climbing to the level, or a month passing since the previous automatic payment. Prepay never has one, because nothing goes unbilled there.

The thirty-day rule has a side effect. Even an account spending almost nothing is charged thirty days after its last automatic payment.

So a live account has a monthly pulse in its transaction history, and a gap in that pulse tells you the account was dormant.

02

How does the threshold grow?

Google raises it in steps, on its own, once the account has accrued cost and settled it successfully several times. Google does not publish a schedule and does not raise it on request. Time and clean payments are the only inputs, and a failed charge interrupts the climb rather than delaying it neatly.

A cheap account with a high threshold is a contradiction. The two do not go together, and Billing then Transactions settles the question in under a minute. Ask for that screen rather than for reassurance.

03

How do you read the threshold in an account?

You read it indirectly, from the transactions. Charges that are small and close together mean a low threshold. Charges that are larger and further apart mean a higher one. The shape of that history is the evidence; a number quoted in a listing is not.

  1. Open Billing, then Transactions and set the date range to the full life of the account.
  2. Look at the gaps between charges — days apart is better than hours apart.
  3. Look at the size of each charge — rising amounts over time mean Google has been extending trust.
  4. Look for failures — a declined charge followed by a long gap explains a lot about an account's price.
  5. Check Billing, then Settings to confirm the account is on postpay at all.
04

What happens when a charge fails?

Delivery stops until the balance is cleared. The account is not suspended and nothing has gone wrong policy-wise, but progress towards a higher threshold is interrupted and the account goes quiet exactly as if it had been stopped. On a bought account this is the most common first-week problem and the easiest to avoid.

Cross-border cards decline more often than people expect. Payment methods that work covers what tends to fail and why.

Common questions

Can I ask Google to raise the threshold?

No. Google raises it on its own schedule after the account has accrued cost and paid it without failures, repeatedly. There is no setting, no form and no support request that moves it, and paying early does not count as paying reliably.

Does the threshold reset when the account changes hands?

It sits with the account and the profile paying for it, so swapping who signs in leaves it untouched. Swapping the card underneath is another story, and that one draws attention.

What happens if a charge fails?

Delivery stops until the balance is cleared, and the account's progress towards a higher threshold is interrupted. A failed charge is not a suspension and is not a policy problem; it is the most common and most avoidable way a working account goes quiet.
